Ripple Effect of Inclusion

How UESL Creates Opportunities + Builds Community

At the Unified Esports League, our passion for supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) goes beyond the gaming arena. It’s a philosophy that touches every aspect of our work, including how we approach hiring and employment. The story of Sai and Ren, two of our UESL coaches, beautifully illustrates how relationships, community, and compassion create a domino effect of opportunity—not just for individuals, but for entire families.

Sai’s Journey to UESL

It all started with Sai, who joined UESL as a coach after being inspired by his close friend, Nathan, a team member at our Rancho Bernardo location. Nathan’s connection to UESL ran deep—his sister, who has IDD, attends our Poway location. Witnessing the impact of the program on Nathan’s family motivated Sai to apply and become a part of our mission.

During Sai’s interview, he shared something deeply personal: his experience living with Tourette’s Syndrome. He explained how his tics, which became more prominent in stressful situations, had taught him valuable coping mechanisms. Sai’s journey of self-regulation and resilience gave him a unique perspective. His experience helped him immediately empathize with our UESL clients, many of whom face challenges beyond their control. Sai’s presence on our team became a source of strength and understanding for everyone he worked with.

Ren’s Path to UESL

Inspired by Sai’s role and the positive impact UESL had on him, Sai’s brother, Ren, decided to join the program as a coach at our Poway location. Ren already had experience working with individuals with IDD through a gaming club at his school, where special needs students gathered to play video games and connect.

Despite being shy during his interview and trial day, Ren’s passion for inclusion and his love of gaming quickly shone through. On his very first day, he jumped right into action—gaming with clients and encouraging new participants to join in on Super Smash Brothers. Ren’s ability to foster engagement and build friendships among our clients was evident from the start.

A Domino Effect of Compassion + Opportunity

This story highlights the ripple effect of UESL’s inclusive philosophy. One connection—Nathan’s hiring—opened doors for Sai, who brought with him a natural compassion that resonated deeply with our mission. Sai, in turn, inspired his brother Ren to join, creating a chain of opportunities that touched not only individuals but an entire family.

It’s a testament to the power of relationships and the community we’re building at UESL. Every hire isn’t just about filling a position; it’s about creating an ecosystem of understanding, support, and shared purpose.

Why This Matters

At UESL, we know that inclusion starts with the people who represent our mission. By fostering a culture that values lived experiences, compassion, and personal growth, we ensure our clients and their families are supported by individuals who truly understand and believe in our vision.

The story of Sai and Ren is just one example of how UESL is more than a workplace—it’s a community where every individual, whether client or coach, has a chance to thrive.
