Guide: November IDD-Friendly Activities

November is full of exciting activities and gatherings across San Diego County that cater specifically to the IDD community. We hope that these guides make it easier to get out and connect with the community. If you know of any additional events/activities that could be featured in our guides - please let us know!

Here are ten fantastic events you should mark on your calendar:

  • Sensory-Friendly Production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Date/Time: November 2, 2024 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Location: Mt. Carmel High School

Description: 15-year old Christopher excels at math, but has difficulty interpreting everyday life. He doesn’t trust strangers, hates being touched, and has never traveled beyond the end of his street alone. When he comes under suspicion for the killing of his neighbor’s dog, he must take a challenging, enlightening journey to solve the mystery.

  • WDO Inclusive Dance

    Date/Time: Free Classes Happening Weekly

    Location: Wheelchair Dancers, San Diego, CA

    Description: Our vision is to utilize dance as a vehicle to empower children and adults with physical challenges through our free community dance classes. We aim to make dance accessible for all people.

  • San Diego Botanic Garden Lightscape

    Date/Time: November 15, 2024 - January 5, 2025

    Location: San Diego Botanic Garden

    Description: Featuring exciting new installations along with returning fan favorites, this one-mile loop has been reimagined to surprise and delight visitors. Merging nature and art, the Garden will come to life at night with festive sights and sounds for all to enjoy.

  • Sensory Friendly Mornings

    Date/Time: Sundays, 9:30–11:30 am

    Location: San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, San Diego, CA

    Description: Geared for families with children on the spectrum or with sensory sensitivities. Noise cancelling headphones are available for check out from the front desk.

  • Financial Literacy Workshop

    Date/Time: November 2, 2024, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

    Location: Carlsbad Community Center, Carlsbad, CA

    Description: This workshop covers the basics of financial literacy, including budgeting and saving, in a way that's accessible for individuals with IDD. Gain practical skills for everyday money management.

  • Encinitas Holiday Street Fair

    Date/Time: November 24, 2024, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

    Location: Encinitas, CA

    Description: Support local artisans, including those from the IDD community, by exploring handmade crafts and gifts. This festive fair is the perfect way to start your holiday shopping while celebrating local talent.

  • Chair Yoga + Meditation

    Date/Time: November 5, 2024, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM

    Location: La Jolla Community Center, La Jolla, CA

    Description: This gentle form of yoga is practiced sitting on a chair and is especially suitable for all ages, people with balance or coordination issues, and those with disabilities. Chair yoga helps increase flexibility, lung capacity, circulation and strength, improves balance, and relieves stress. Class incorporates breathing exercises, stretching, yoga postures, and final relaxation along with Meditation techniques.

  • Sensory-Friendly Movie Nights

    Date/Time: Weekly, See showings for times

    Location: AMC Mission Valley 20, San Diego, CA

    Description: AMC is proud to partner with the Autism Society to offer unique movie showings where we turn the lights up, and turn the sound down, so you can get up, dance, walk, shout or sing! Our Sensory Friendly Film program is available on the second and fourth Saturday (family-friendly) and Wednesday evenings (mature audiences) of every month.

  • NCCSE’s Adult Transition Fair

    Date/Time: November 2, 2024 9:00 am – 11:30 am

    Location: San Marcos, CA

    Description: Providing information on adult support, employment and educational options available to students after they exit high school or adult transition programs. Whether a student is working towards a diploma or a certificate of completion, this event will feature transition information from which all students may benefit.

  • Sesame Place American Sign Language (ASL) Saturdays

Date/Time: Saturdays, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Location: San Diego, CA

Description: Feature a Certified ASL Interpreter stationed at select presentations throughout the park, ensuring that guests who are deaf or hard-of-hearing can fully engage with the interactive shows and activities featuring everyone’s favorite furry friends from Sesame Street.
