Community Spotlight: Autism Society of SD
A Beacon of Support, Advocacy, and Empowerment
At Unified Esports League (UESL), we are honored to partner with organizations that are making real, lasting impacts in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). One of those invaluable partners is the Autism Society of San Diego, a longstanding pillar of advocacy, support, and education for individuals and families navigating the autism journey. Today, we want to spotlight their incredible work, celebrate their mission, and express our heartfelt gratitude for their partnership and continued service to our community.
A Legacy of Advocacy: The Autism Society of San Diego’s Origin Story
The Autism Society of San Diego was founded in the 1960s by a group of passionate parents and professionals who saw the urgent need for better services, support, and understanding for individuals on the autism spectrum. Since then, it has grown into one of the most trusted and active nonprofit organizations in San Diego County. As a chapter of the national Autism Society of America, the local branch continues to offer life-enhancing programs and resources tailored to the unique needs of San Diegans.
Their mission is simple yet profound: to improve the lives of all affected by autism. And they do this by promoting meaningful participation and self-determination in all aspects of life.
🧩 Who They Serve
The Autism Society of San Diego serves a wide range of individuals and families, including:
Children, teens, and adults diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Parents and caregivers seeking guidance, community, and support
Professionals working in education, therapy, and care settings
Community members wanting to learn more and contribute
They recognize that autism is a spectrum, and their approach reflects a commitment to personalized support and inclusive programming for individuals at every level of need.
Community-Centered Programs + Services
The services and programs offered by the Autism Society of San Diego are diverse and holistic, designed to create both immediate support and long-term growth opportunities for individuals and families. Here are just a few of their standout offerings:
🔹 Camp I CAN
Developed in collaboration with the YMCA, Camp I CAN (Camp Including Children with Autism Now) is a summer day camp tailored to meet the needs of autistic children and teens. With experienced staff and a focus on safety, fun, and social engagement, Camp I CAN provides a much-needed summer experience where campers can feel confident and supported.
🔹 Family Fun Events & Pool Parties
Throughout the year, the Autism Society hosts sensory-friendly events including monthly pool parties at the Aqua Pros Swim School. These events offer a safe, relaxed environment for children and families to enjoy recreational time, often with lifeguards and trained volunteers who understand sensory sensitivities.
🔹 Educational Workshops & Support Groups
From IEP workshops to sibling support sessions and parent meetups, the Autism Society is deeply invested in educating families and creating strong support networks. Their bilingual resources and culturally inclusive programming ensure that diverse communities can access the help they need.
🔹 Financial Assistance for Therapeutic Services
Recognizing that cost is a major barrier for many families, the Autism Society provides scholarships and financial assistance for autism-related therapies and interventions.
